In dozens of jury and bench trials and appeals, Mr. Crockett (a former associate and equity partner at Latham & Watkins from 1982 to 2014, and who served on management committees) has represented defense contractors and airframe manufacturers, airlines and an international transport association, real estate developers, schools, agricultural companies, public agencies, public utilities, television networks and motion pictures producers, actors, religious institutions, investment banks, hospital chains, an NFL team, law firms, hotel owners, REITs, a Las Vegas casino, for profit and non-profit educational institutions, physicians, banks and more.
Mr. Crockett has tried to bench and jury verdicts disputes involving: corporate control (bench and jury); antitrust (jury); eminent domain (bench and jury); environmental disputes (bench and jury); intellectual property (bench); trade secrets (bench); shareholder contests (bench and jury); state and local taxes (bench); breach of fiduciary duty and accounting (jury) and many more matters. He has had plaintiffs’ jury verdicts in excess of $10 million, one as high as $76 million and a few settlements in the $30-50 million range. He has obtained defense verdicts where in excess of $100 million went to the jury. Some of his trials have taken months to complete. Bob is regularly consulted by the Governor’s Judicial Appointments Secretary on the nomination of appellate court justices.
Mr. Crockett has handled cases in California, Hawaii state and federal courts, Nevada Supreme Court, Washington state federal courts, Delaware Court of Chancery, New York federal courts, New Jersey federal courts, and Lousiana federal courts, as well as domestic and international arbitrations. He is admitted to the United States Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit, California and all federal district courts in California.
Some of Mr. Crockett’s more notable matters include two decades of defense of challenges to the Playa Vista project, a defense and cross-complaint verdict against Donald Sterling in a $110 million dispute over a Century City high-rise, an eminent domain award for the Burbank Airport against the Lockheed Corporation, an antitrust defense and cross-complaint verdict for Adventist Health Systems in Bakersfield, a Ninth Circuit reversal and judgment for a Big Bear Lake condominium development, the successful completion of crude oil and natural gas pipelines throughout California, the defense of Ramada Corporation against Donald Callender, a jury verdict in a derivative action for minority shareholders in a healthcare dispute, an international arbitration award for Direct TV against Televisa, and more.
Bob’s experience has been broad. He has represented a high school student athlete before a school board who was denied the right to take a final exam to qualify for a UCLA scholarship. Bob has advised an NFL team contemplating relocating to Los Angeles. He has represented religious leaders in a defamation action. He has represented a Las Vegas casino in a RICO action. Bob represented a prominent soap opera actress in a contractual dispute with Columbia Pictures. He has represented parties to a dispute between members of Credence Clearwater Revival and their former producer. Bob has represented a telemarketing company in an FTC action. Bob has represented a plastics company in a criminal action brought by the EPA. Bob represented UCLA in a dispute with a organ transplant program. He has defended a private school in a sexual abuse case. Bob has represented two of the nation’s largest hotel REITs.
Mr. Crockett has published articles relating to the First Amendment, software, jury statistics and nineteenth-century legal proceedings. Bob has provided advice to the Los Angeles Superior Court system about jury selection issues. He has managed the successful reelection campaign of a noted Los Angeles Superior Court judge. He was an editor of the Los Angeles Lawyer and twice named Superlawer of the year by that magazine.
